From 14 November 2026 to 10 January 2027, the Fondazione Ragghianti and the Fondazione Centro delle Arti Lucca present the exhibition Lo spazio esteso. Percorsi d’arte negli anni Ottanta, curated by Paolo Bolpagni and Francesca Pola.
The exhibition, which extends across the exhibition rooms of the Fondazione Ragghianti and a number of venues in the city’s historic centre, aims to offer a fresh perspective on European art of the 1980s, one of the most multifaceted and complex decades in recent history. Dedicated to a period commonly associated with the international success of neo-figurative movements, such as the Italian Transavantgarde or German Neo-Expressionism, the exhibition focuses on an equally fruitful and innovative alternative, one that has so far received less critical attention: that of non-figurative and radically aniconic trends.
The exhibition thus explores the work of some of the most representative figures – from different generations – of the renewal of European art during that period, united by a vision that emphasises, for example, the indissoluble relationship between physicality and the imagination in the conception and execution of painting, often realised in works whose spatial tension projects them beyond the physical boundaries of the canvas and beyond the conceptual boundaries of the painting itself.
These include Carla Accardi, Rodolfo Aricò, Gianni Asdrubali, Enrico Castellani, Alan Charlton, Carlo Ciussi, Gianni Colombo, Dadamaino, Piero Dorazio, Wolfgang Laib, François Morellet, Mario Nigro, Achille Perilli, Pino Pinelli, Bruno Querci, Fred Sandback, Angelo Savelli, Nelio Sonego, Ettore Spalletti, Niele Toroni, David Tremlett, Günter Umberg, Felice Varini, Grazia Varisco, Elisabeth Vary and Michel Verjux.
